The FJ Cruiser was initially launched in 2006, exclusively for the North American market. It was inspired by the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, featuring a retro design and off-road capabilities.
FJ Cruiser and Land Cruiser FJ40
The FJ Cruiser was built on the Land Cruiser Prado chassis, embodying the iconic style of the FJ40. This includes a distinctive front design, an almost vertical windshield, a white roof, and rear side windows that wrap around the corners.
In fact, the Japanese model of the Toyota FJ Cruiser features a right-hand drive, a unique side-view mirror, and entirely different lights compared to other current models.
Features in Japan and the United States
In Japan, this model comes with four-wheel drive (4WD), a 4-liter V6 engine (1GR-FE), and a 5-speed automatic transmission.
In the United States, the FJ Cruiser is available in a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration as well as a 4WD model with a 6-speed manual transmission.
This FJ Cruiser also features front-hinged front doors and rear-hinged rear doors with integrated B-pillars. The rear door cannot be opened unless the front door is opened first.
Additionally, the vehicle is assembled at the Hamura plant of Hino Motors, Ltd.
The Legendary FJ40 That Inspired It
As mentioned, the FJ Cruiser was inspired by the classic Toyota FJ40, which was produced between 1960 and 1984.
Throughout history, these classic off-road vehicles have been renowned for their quality and fame worldwide.
The FJ40 became a symbol of exploration, durability, and adventure. Each vehicle holds a story, and at FJ Classics, we’ve made it our mission to bring those stories back to life with every restoration.
The FJ Cruiser Is a Modern Tribute
As demonstrated, this modern model combines retro design with current technology, contemporary lines, new elements, and refreshed designs.
The FJ Cruiser quickly won the hearts of vehicle enthusiasts, collectors, and Toyota fans thanks to its powerful engine, advanced suspension, and ability to traverse diverse terrains—continuing the legacy of the FJ40.
Different Eras, Same Essence
The DNA of the FJ40 is unmistakable. Both models represent freedom and adventure on wheels, hallmarks of Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles.
Many enthusiasts prefer a restored vehicle for its history and the customization options we offer, tailoring each vehicle to the owner’s preferences and needs.
At FJ Classics, we understand that whether it’s a restored FJ40 or a modern FJ Cruiser, the essence of the Land Cruiser is always present. We are proud to be part of this legacy and tradition.
