A Legacy of Innovation Across Series

The Toyota Land Cruiser's evolution through its various series represents more than just automotive development – it tells a story of engineering excellence and continuous innovation. From the groundbreaking FJ series to the sophisticated J80, each iteration has contributed to building what many consider the most reliable and capable 4x4 vehicle ever produced.

Toyota Land Cruiser 20 series

On October 31, 1957, Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. was established, beginning its sales in the United States in 1958.

At that time, a total of 288 vehicles were sold, of which only one was internally considered part of the 20 series.

However, this off-road vehicle was powerful, similar to a Jeep, featuring a six-cylinder inline F-type engine with a total displacement of 3.9 liters.

Although the initial demand for the Land Cruiser was low, it quickly caught the market’s attention, becoming Toyota’s best-selling vehicle between 1961 and 1965Thus, the 40 Series Land Cruiser was introduced to the public in 1960, known as the FJ40 (F for the engine type and J for Jeep).

Initially, the FJ40 was sold at the same price as the 20 Series, despite having a more evolved, robust, and revolutionary designBy this time, new assembly techniques had already been introduced, improving the final product. The addition of a two-speed transfer case significantly enhanced the SUV’s off-road capabilities and power with four-wheel drive.

In fact, in 1975, a larger 4.2-liter inline-six 2F engine was added to the model.

Today, FJ Classics has revived these iconic vehicles through full restorations, delivering them with outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail. Their restored Land Cruisers are available starting at $30,000 and beyond.

Toyota Land Cruiser 55 series

In 1967, Toyota introduced the Land Cruiser 55 Series to the market, offering a comfortable and passenger-friendly alternative while still being a powerful vehicle.

This series featured a wheelbase that was 16 inches longer and included specific design changes. It retained a 3.9-liter inline-six engine with a newly shaped cylinder head and a camshaft inspired by the company’s smaller 2R four-cylinder engine, enhancing the SUV’s highway performance.

In 1975, the 55 Series replaced the F-type engine with the 4.2-liter inline-six 2F engine. Additionally, it introduced a new four-speed manual transmission, replacing the previous three-speed transmission used before 1975.

In 1980, Toyota replaced the 55 Series with the new 60 Series, featuring a more squared-off design tailored for greater on-road comfortThis series retained standard four-wheel drive and solid front and rear axles.

In 1988, the model was refreshed, replacing its pair of round headlights with a set of four square headlights, introducing a modern-era instrument panel, and swapping the 4.2-liter 2F engine for a 4.0-liter 3F engine.

Despite having a smaller displacement, this series delivered increased power and torque, boosting output from 125 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque to 155 horsepower and 220 lb-ft.

The Land Cruiser 70 Series preserved the spirit of the 40 Series, prioritizing off-road performance over personal comfort.

This series offered a wide range of body styles, including a two-door variant and a longer, family-oriented version, which in 1990 evolved into what is now known as the Land Cruiser Prado.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series was introduced in 1990 as a longer and wider vehicle, powered by a 4.0-liter inline-six engine producing 155 horsepower.

It featured a full-time four-wheel-drive system, allowing it to drive on dry pavement without binding, along with a lockable center differential.

In 1993, this Land Cruiser received a new 4.5-liter inline-six 1FZ-FE engine, capable of producing up to 212 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, it introduced improved differentials with optional front and rear locking capabilities.
